Purity of Heart

Q: Do you sometimes feel you are spinning your wheels.

When you write a book, double-space the manuscript, proofread it, write query letters to agents, and then don't have anywhere to send it?

A: A caller asked Jonathan Kozol about the fickleness of liberals, who go from civil rights, to feminism, to gay pride, to the DC-10, without ever seeing anything through, and he quoted Kierkegaard, "Purity of heart is to will one thing."

You have to make your occupation a vocation.

To stick with it. See it through.

Through thin and thin.

It's not about the result it's about the process.

It's not about the end it's about the means.

The medium is not the message. The message is the message. The message is the medium.

You get weary, wearing the same shabby dress.

Tenderness is in short supply.

Life's a bitch and then you die. So what?

Write a pamphlet.

Send it out.

Write another one.

You have a responsibility to eternity.
