Brew remembered a picture of his first day of school, showing himself and his
mother in front of the building. Brew was wearing an outfit with short pants and
a bush jacket, or cabana coat. Buster Brown shoes.
His Grandma Nordhem must
have taken the picture.
His father was in the Pacific, in the Solomon Islands,
a naval officer, in World War II. 1945. Brew was six. The Class of '57.
A lot of the Class of '57, their father was away, in the service.
Brew's
brother Bill would have been three.
Was there a picture of the two of them?
Bill must have been there. Where else would he be?
Did Brew have the rug
he took a nap on?
Brew's first memory of school was of being denied crayon
privileges because he squirmed during nap.
He got a wiggleworm jacket hung
on him the first day of school.
