A Tale of Two Cities

 

Gloria Jones had to pay for

Nelson Algren’s burial.  He died

flat broke.  He told Kaylie not to

become a writer.  At least he didn’t

try to lay her, like her father’s old friend

William Styron did.  Kaylie said

she couldn’t see what Simone de Beauvoir

saw in him, until she saw a picture of him

in his glorious manhood.  He made Jean-Paul Sartre

look like a weasel.  An epicene French intellectual.
