Mayberry

My dad was elected mayor of Delray Beach in 1949.

In the census that year, the town had 8,000 people,

but some of them were rich people, at the beach,

and black people, in colored town.  Most of the citizens

were middle-class.  They worked in agriculture, tourism, or

banking-insurance-and-real estate.  Some were poor,

I guess.  It felt like Mayberry RFD to me.  We played

Belle Glade, Clewiston, and Pahokee, in football,

basketball, and baseball.  Mel Tillis is from Pahokee.

Burt Reynolds is from West Palm.  Or Riviera Beach.

People from Palm Beach High looked down on Seacrest.

He made a movie with Dudley Remus.  Herb Score was from

Lake Worth.  He played Pony League ball.

Gifford Nutbrown became a golf pro.

I’m a paperback writer.  I have a web site,

like Joey Pants, in Second Best.  Coming up on

a crossing-guard’s belly.  No fat chicks.

We knew where each other’s parents

went to church.  Nobody’s parents were

divorced except one boy whose mother

ran a dress shop, like Constance MacKenzie

in Peyton Place.
