Coral Gables is where Books & Books is.
Mitch Kaplan. He founded Miami
Book Fair International.
I went in 1987. I had a booth. It was in Miami, downtown,
near
the old Olympia Theater, now the Guzman Cultural Center.
I went there with my
grandfather after he got his hair cut at
the Barber College. He drove Grandma
Cason down to shop at Burdine's.
Books & Books said they had the books of
every local Florida writer
but they didn't have mine. I called on the store and
talked to the book buyer.
Maybe he didn't like the cut of my jib. Who knows?
Maybe he thought I was
homophobic. I think he was gay. Maybe he wasn't. Who
cares?
The titty magazine Cavalier used to have their offices in Coral
Gables.
I told the fiction editor, Nye Willden, "The only complaint I have
with
your magazine is my tongue sticks to the paper."
