When we lived in Delray Beach we used to drive to Parker
at Christmas, and
other holidays, to visit Granny Brown,
and Uncle Wayne, who lived with her. He
was crippled with
arthritis and drew a disability pension from the Air Force.
Granny
was on disability for a bad heart. She couldn't work,
and her widow's social
security pension wasn't much. The family doctor
did her a favor. Of course,
she really did have a bad heart. I know
she loved to go to the doctor. And to
church. Those were her
stalwarts and two main activities. She loved to work
outside,
in her garden. She never got too old to do that.
She watched television.
She sent money to
Billy Graham and Benny Hinn.
The boys loved her.
She
was musical.
She played the harp
with a mouth full of snuff.
At her funeral,
Billy Donaldson said
whenever he came by her house, she was singing.
Owen and
Balder played "Sorrow Encompass'd Me Around."
(At Wayne's funeral they
played "Whiskey Before Breakfast.")
