Charles Willeford going on about
Samuel Beckett going on about hats.
The
British filmed all 19 Beckett plays
on four DVDs. The first one has a documentary
on
the project. One director wondered what
Beckett's life would have been like if
the literati
hadn't taken him up. A lot like my life, I suspect.
He would
have written just as much, but nobody
would know. Most of his plays would not
have been produced,
his novels, poetry, and critical writings not published.
He called
Chatto & Windus Shat-On & Wind-Up. He said the best place
to
get oysters in Paris was where Sugar Ray Robinson ate
when he was in town. He
knew things like that.
So he wasn't a complete ascetic.
