Ha Ha

High school was to prepare me for the service.

The service was to prepare me for a job in

corporate America.  This was what the Beat Generation

was all about.  Some went, some didn’t.  Some dropped out.

Tuned in, turned on.  Moved to Greenwich Village.

Mr. Ennis was my art teacher.

We read e. e. cummings, Dylan Thomas, Ezra Pound.

Ezra Pound was in St. Elizabeth’s.  Why shouldn’t I

become a writer?  Why shouldn’t I write poetry?

We read Eugene O’Neill.  We read Tennessee Williams.

We read Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, and Edward Albee.

The Zoo Story was in Evergreen magazine.

Terry Southern.  “Red Dirt Marijuana.”

Bob Cousy dribbled behind his back.

Everyone smoked cigarettes.

Martinis.  Miltown.  Psychoanalysis.

Carolyn Jones playing The Existentialist in The Bachelor Party.
