My Second Hitch

My second hitch in the Air Force

I was a prior-service person.  A retread.

I couldn’t make it on the outside

and reenlisted.  I had low self-esteem.

I drank in a bar off-base frequented by

wet-brain alcoholics from the VA hospital

in Biloxi.  The two tunes on the jukebox I knew

were “Hello, Walls” and “There Stands the Glass,”

the Beer-Drinkers National Anthem.
