I spent my last year in the service

in Albany, Georgia, waiting to get out.

I joined the NCO Club as an A/1C with

over-four-years service. I drank in the Stag Bar

in my fatigues, after work and on the weekends.

I didn’t go off-base but once, to eat frog legs in

a catfish restaurant. I listened to Flatt and Scruggs

for 15 minutes at suppertime. I saw a movie about

Hank Williams. The local TV was used cars and pro wrestling.

The Sahara of the Bozart, as bad as Dothan, Alabama.

I made a hi-fi set from a kit and listened to the Metropolitan Opera

on Saturday. There was no jazz on the radio. Jazz was dead.

There was the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
