I Didn’t Go To College To

I didn’t go to college to join a fraternity,

to party, to earn a credential, so I could

belong to a profession.  I went to get a liberal arts

degree I could get an entry-level white-collar job with

after I graduated.  Get on the register for civil service.

I also thought college would be a good place to meet

a soul-mate I could marry and share a life with.

Have a family.  I met Brenda.  We got married.

I got a degree in anthropology.  So did she.

Most employers feel you are a smart-ass who acts

above his station.  I didn’t know that yet.  If I had,

I would have done the same thing.  What difference

did it make?  I was going to be a writer.
