Ford Maddox Ford and the Devil's Disciple

Hemingway was having a drink at the Closerie des Lilas, where the poets used to meet, not the people who went to places to be seen, stared at, outside, and Ford Maddox Ford joined him.

Hilaire Belloc walked by and Ford cut him dead. Because, he explained to Hemingway, a gentleman must cut a cad.

There is a discussion on gentlemen, and cads, or, rather, Ford gives Hemingway his opinion and Hemingway eggs him on, because he doesn't like him, and is making a fool of him, in the writing. Making him look like a horse's ass.

Ford left. Hemingway pointed Belloc out to a friend who joined him for a drink, when he walked by the other way, and the friend said, "That's Alestair Crowley, the diabolist."
