The Writer as Someone to Be

      Writer is a glamorous job.

You are your own person.  You don’t punch a time clock.

You don’t do team-building exercises with your co-workers.  You don’t male-bond.  You aren’t a slave to fashion.  You don’t keep up with the Joneses.

You live the life of the mind, unbought and unbossed.

You march to your own drummer.

      You go your own way.

You don’t care if anybody follows you or not.  That’s not the point.  The point is being able to do it, to be the master of your own fate.

You decide what you are going to do and when you are going to do it.  If you need something, you figure out how to get it.  If you don’t need it, you do without.

      You are pragmatic.  Practical.

What looks like lunacy is really simple common sense.

It don’t seem that crazy to me.
