Who Writes?

What sort of a person becomes a writer?

I believe it’s someone who feels different from his mates.

Not only that, he hears explanations of the way things work and they don’t make any sense to him.  He questions them.

He soon learns this makes other people nervous.  He learns to keep his questions to himself.  To keep his own counsel.

It’s like keeping two sets of books.  He leads a double life, from early on, as a member of his family, a student, a playmate to other kids, other members of the gang, our gang, he’s not a real member of the gang, he’s an outsider, not fully accepted, and he’s not sure why, or doesn’t know what to do to become accepted.

He’s pretty sure it’s not him who’s crazy, it’s them, but how likely is that, that everybody else is crazy and he’s sane.

      He keeps this to himself.
