8. Exterior. Yard of Pyle's house. His car, your father's Oldsmobile station wagon with a baby seat in the back for the grandchildren, is parked under a magnolia tree with Spanish moss in it. He puts his backpack in the front seat and walks to the back yard. Buckets, sacks of shredded paper, bags of fertilizer, mulch. There's a pole shed in the back with bicycles chained to a column. They haven't been ridden in a while. There's a gas lawnmower. The starter rope is pulled all the way out. The yard is not mowed. The yard is planted with plants that attract butterflies and songbirds. Back of the pole shed is a chicken pen. PYLE opens the door and props it open.

PYLE

Good morning, girls.

He scoops two scoops of scratch feed out of a GI can under the pole shed. The chickens peck at it.

9. Interior. Convenience store. PYLE gets a 20 oz cup of coffee and a pint of milk. He approaches the counter. CLERK looks at him, looks at his nametag.

CLERK

That's work?

PYLE

Writers conference.
I'm a presenter.

CLERK

Oh.

10. Exterior. PYLE, driving along Beach Drive, the Gulf on his left, nice homes on his right. He has the cruise control set on 35, like the nerd's father, in Revenge of the Nerds. A long line of cars behind him.

11. Exterior. PYLE driving. On Highway 98, at the entrance to the junior college. A marquee with the college name on it says Gulf Coast Writers Conference, September 19, 9:00 - 5:00. Pyle pulls in and drives to the parking in front of the Language Arts building. He parks, gets his backpack out. He opens the backpack and puts on his hat. He carries his coffee cup and a pint of milk.

12. Exterior of Language Arts building. PYLE looks at building name, over door.

PYLE

Plant Skills for Life. Botany. Lord Love a Duck.

13. Interior. Language Arts building. Hallway. The building is institutional. Functional. No halls of ivy, no tradition. It could be a vo-tech, or a prison. A mental hospital or an old folks home. All it needs is Muzak. Thank god there's no Muzak. PYLE approaches the registration desk. He sees PAM, two YOUNG WOMEN, helping her. They're real young. Think of Birdy Abundas in The Man Who Wasn't There.

PAM

Good morning, Pyle.

PYLE

Good morning. Great day, huh.

PAM

Supposed to be hot. But we're inside.
Let's see. Where's your nametag?

PYLE

Here it is.

Picks up nametag, pins it over beer logo on his shirt. He picks up a program.

I'll just take a program.

14. Interior. Hallway. Bookstore. A table with books of conference authors. Two VOLUNTEERS stand behind counter. PYLE walks up. Opens backpack, takes out copies of Bukowski Never Did This.

PYLE

May I leave these books with you.

VOLUNTEER

Certainly. Let me get your name and address, so I can mail you a check for books we sell.

PYLE

Oh, you won't sell any.
But I'll be glad to give you my name and address.

She hands him a clipboard. He hands her the books. He steps to the side, fills out a form. To the SECOND VOLUNTEER, he speaks.

PYLE

May I leave my backpack behind the counter. I don't need it until 2:45.

SECOND VOLUNTEER

Certainly. We'll be glad to watch it for you.

15. Interior. Large lecture hall. PYLE stops at a coffee table near the entrance and fills his cup. He adds milk. He picks up a glazed donut in a paper napkin.

PYLE

Carpe donut.
Seize the donut.
Serviette, Miss Follansbee?
