Old Folks was at home today, typing up
what he'd written yesterday. He got back too late from his road trip to cook supper,
watch television with Brenda, and type everything he wrote in his composition book
yesterday up.

So far, Empire Falls reminded Old Folks of Peyton Place.
At least Ed Harris didn't need a face lift. He didn't even wear a toupée.
(Gunning through the channels, Old Folks saw Michael Douglas in Traffic.
He's giving Burt Reynolds a run for the burn-victim look.)

Old Folks went to the post office to mail Dread Clampitt and Root
Doctor to Apalachicola.
He went by Books-A-Million, to buy Black Fly
Season, which is out June 1, but they didn't have it in.
He went by Blockbuster,
to rent Deconstructing Harry, but they didn't have it.
"I thought
you had all of Woody Allen's movies," he said.
"We don't have that
one," the sales associate said.
"I guess it's so funny it gets
stolen a lot," Old Folks said.
The sales associate giggled.

He went by the library to put Black Fly Season on reserve. It wasn't
in the system. The woman who could tell him if the library had ordered it only came
in mornings, since the accident.
"I know who she is," Old Folks
said. "I'm in here every morning. I'll ask her tomorrow."
He
ordered Deconstructing Harry from Netflix.

The library had the May issue of W magazine on sale, discarded, for
25¢. The one with the article on Natalie Portman.
Old Folks tried to buy
it at Books-A-Million, but could never find it in the magazine section. Now here
it was, for a quarter.

Gunning through the channels yesterday, he got to see President Bush say,
"...people that had been trained in some instances to disassemble--that means
not tell the truth."
Thank you for explaining that. Sir.
Is
it true that "niggardly" means pertaining to African-Americans,
and was part of President Nixon's Southern Strategy?
Would you comment on
Pat Buchanan's suggestion that Deep Throat made us lose the Vietnam War?
Do you think without Deep Throat Nixon would still be president, and we'd still be
fighting the Vietnam War?
He would run every four years on ending it?
We shouldn't change horses in the middle of the stream, should we?
Shouldn't
we let the man in office finish the job?
