Subj: Introduction
I came into your bookstore on Tuesday and introduced myself as a writer, when
asked if I was from around there.
I said I was writing a travel book, but
it's more a cultural ecology of a vanishing way of life, the mullet
culture, in the region they used to inhabit, and are being driven out of by rising
property taxes, lack of employment in the maritime trades, disappearing habitat,
as the condos go up, the lady realtors make their commissions, the
auslanders move in, and Florida's Forgotten Coast, formerly Florida's Last Frontier,
enjoys a gentrification, a Disneyfication, Disney's now a partner of the St. Joe
Company, who's now a land developer instead of a paper mill and pulpwood land, a
bank and a railroad, don't worry, don't think about it, it will only make your head
hurt.
You can watch the buildings going up, like the buildings
erupting from the earth in Brazil.
Of course, that was just a
dream, a dream in a fantasy, a movie, I can't afford to make a movie so I write a
book, I post it online, daily, as I write it, people bookmark my web page as a Favorite
and visit it every day at work, or at home, and download the day's productions, print
them out, read them, send the hard copy to a friend.
And it weaves in what
is happening on the teevee, in my life, as I read books, watch movies, write, think,
imagine, and figure out, by putting two and two together and seeing a pattern.
A few laughs.
If you don't laugh it will scare you.
