Florida Cracker

Q: I thought OLD FOLKS AT HOME: A FLORIDA CRACKER'S SUNSET CRUISE was a better book than Dream State or Florida Dreams.

A: I think so too.

Q: But it won't be published because a Florida cracker is a racist, a sexist, and a homophobe.

A: I am a racist, a sexist, and a homophobe. Because I am a straight white male of a certain age from the south.

And that's the only viewpoint I can write from. A culturally-conditioned one, given that education may make me more broadminded and less ethnocentric.

Q: A multiculturalism that excludes the Florida cracker isn't pancultural, it omits an ethnic voice. It denies a voice to an ethnic group.

It holds a voice in contempt prior to investigation.

A: It's the voice's responsibility to make itself heard.

Wherever it can.

Through whatever medium it can.

Q: Why did you write a book that would be unpublished on grounds of racism?

A: It's not racist.

I believe in diversity.

I believe in fairness of judging.

I believe people who disagree with me will want to know how I justify what I believe. What logic, what evidence do I bring to bear on the argument?

Q: It cannot be discussed. It's inflammatory.

It's okay to silence hate-speech.

A: I do not believe in political correctness, speech codes, or the Thought Police.

All we have to do to make that kind of hell come true is not resist it. Not oppose it.

Did you know that it is okay to discriminate against a Florida cracker because he is some kind of hateful bigot.

I say look at the people who say that's okay.

They're bigots. They're hateful.

Q: You have Florida in the title of several books, or series of books, don't you?

A: Yes. And Florida cracker in the title of one book.

A: Any other words that occur frequently?

Q: Writer. Sometimes Florida writer. Sometimes underground writer. Vernacular writer.
