Dear Mary Tahan:
I plan to serialize my next book on the worldwide web as a publicity stunt, like
Normal Mailer serializing An American Dream in Esquire, or Tom Wolfe
serializing Bonfire of the Vanities in Rolling Stone, or Stephen King
serializing The Plant on the web, except I'm doing it without getting paid,
which stigmatizes the endeavor, in some eyes.
If I didn't have bad publicity,
I wouldn't have any publicity at all.
Mark Twain said you do it without getting
paid until you get paid to do it, but I don't think he had 34 years in mind.
I would like to publish the book, as a book, afterwards.
Would you represent
me in its sale?
Enclosed find a proposal for SORRY BUT NO: CONFESSIONS OF
AN UNDERGROUND WRITER. The proposal will explain why you'd want to do that.
Or it won't. That's the drama of it.
