The local radio station, WDBF, had a sale, and got rid of all their old 78s with
RACE written on them. For a dime apiece.
I bought Big Maybelle's "Gabbin'
Blues." Records by B. B. King and Jimmy Witherspoon. Possibly something by Eddie
"Cleanhead" Vinson. A copy of "Shine" by the Quintet of the
Hot Club of France, with Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli.
That was
the kind of music I listened to, in high school. On the radio, late at night.
I didn't like popular music and you couldn't get jazz on the radio in Delray Beach.
I liked the blues.
The records I bought were 33 1/3, and were mostly jazz,
or classical music.
Elvis Presley put jazz, classical music, and bluegrass
out of business. Folk music.
I didn't like Elvis Presley. I thought he was
a dufous. The real heroes were James Dean and Marlon Brando. Sidney Pointer, even,
in Blackboard Jungle.
Dorothy Dandridge.
