Peyton Place East

We called on bookstores.  Hand’s and the bookstore

in the Delray Mall had my book.  Or they sold out

and didn’t reorder, because I was giving them away.

I don’t remember.  I remember the Delray Library

didn’t have it, because the librarian said they only bought

books that were reviewed in the New York Times or

Publishers Weekly.  Not small press books.  This was

not true, but it was her library—what could I do?

I made fun of them in my column in the News-Journal.

I compared Delray Beach to Gopher Prairie, Minnesota.

Peyton Place East.  A hotbed of Babbitry.

Small-town chauvinism.

The burghers were midgets.

Pecksniffs and fundamentalist ministers.
