My Secret Life

Scrib worked as a custodian at a mental health center.

He was updating Edward Sapir’s essay, “Psychiatric

and Cultural Pitfalls in the Business of Getting a Living.”

Work makes you crazy.  A nurse came up to his table.

She looked at the pamphlets he was selling, looked at him,

and said, “Are you our custodian?  Do you have a secret life?”

Not any more he didn’t.  He had been outed.  He could no longer be

the fly on the wall.  Now he was the 800 lb gorilla in the room.

He quit his job and lived on some money his mother had left him.
