Charles Willeford and Dennis McMillan

Charles Willeford was reading at Miami Book Fair.

I didn’t stay to hear him.  I wanted to get home, to Delray Beach.

But I met his publisher, Dennis McMillan.  I had sent them both

my books.  McMillan said they agreed I was a good writer, but.

But I would never be published by New York.  I was too outré.

Off the wall, he said.  I took that as a compliment.  To be called

off the wall by Charles Willeford.  Norman Mailer called me

off the rails.  Who wants to be the cow-catcher on a train?

I’d rather be tearing through the bushes, the weeds

hitting my windshield like switches.
