Huckster Tax

The Palm Beach County Council of the Arts

administered the distribution of the bed tax money.

Arts support is tourism development.  You had to be

engaged in an activity that directly benefited tourism,

and it went 50/50 to the arts and business.  Then 70/30.

Guess which one was sucking hind-titty.  The council called the bed tax

an arts tax.  I called it a huckster tax.  I said the money went to the media

that ran ads for the arts activities.  Newspapers, radio, and television stations.

And advertising agencies.  Liars and thieves.  Ambulance-chasing lawyers

and whiplash doctors.  The patrons of the arts were siphoning off

the arts largesse.  They left the artists sucking hind-titty.

Of a 70/30 split, it was hucksters 70, artists 30.

And the arts activities had to directly encourage

tourism.  To me, an artist said, “Stay Home.

Go Back Where You Came From.

Support Art There.”
