Reeds and Deeds

Point and Shoot, Florida (YU)--When Heap went to New Orleans and saw the archive where Larry kept copies of all the books he had written, and talked to Larry about what he had done, in a matter-of-fact way--no tuxedo, no Oscar nomination, just Larry and Hazel, enjoying his books, over the years--it didn't register, what he was seeing. What was right before his eyes.

But after he got back, and thought about it, and gave it time to sink in, he realized that he had gotten through, he had connected, he had done what he set out to do, lo, those many years ago, namely get at, and witness to, the truth of who he was through daily typewriting.

He had accomplished his mission.

He could quit.

He probably wouldn't quit, but he could.

The pressure was off.

Now, he could write because he wanted to, and not because he had to.
