Jazz Fest '93

Point and Shoot, Florida (YU)--When Balder was a junior in high school, Heap took him to New Orleans, for Jazz Fest.

Balder played trumpet in the high school band.

He was a jazz fan.

When Heap and Brenda left New Orleans, Larry and Hazel bought all the old bebop lps Heap had collected, in his two hitches in the service.

Hazel loaned these to Balder.

He made tapes of them and xeroxed the liner notes.

Many of them were reissued on CD, but not all of them were. Balder got to hear some obscure albums that have never been reissued on CD.

He probably knew as much about jazz as any kid his age whose parents weren't jazz musicians.

On the way over, Heap left a resume at Ingalls Shipyards in Pascagoula.

He was a soldier in the transition to a post-Cold War economy.

The Reagan-Bush recession had got him.
