Screed is published, then Common Sense, Full Plate, Blue Darter, and Lost Writings. Then Evil Genius and Open Book. Publishing books instead of chapbooks. Forty is published. My 40th book. I will not have another book published for 18 years, when a small press publishes Bukowski Never Did This: A Year in the Life of an Underground Writer and His Family. That's in the next stage, though. No single book is a masterpiece, but I have achieved mastery. I am an American master, working at the top of his form. Lots of disappointment, as everything is rejected and I am turned down for grants and prizes, teaching jobs and stays at arts colonies. I get cranky and hung-up about rejection. This was a difficult situation to work through, and come out the other side of. The books are too long, too formless, too short, and too perfectly formed, but formed in a new template, enema vérité: what you see on the end of the fork when you really look.
