I looked up Robalo Abodabo in Google and got a hit on myself,
a poem
called "Rob." Rob is Don Riley. He caught a 40 lb. snook once.
My
other friend in high school was Jack Neff. We Sunday-painted.
I took art. I
was in the band. I was a reader. I also played sand-lot grab-ass
football, after
school, across the street from our house, and was good at
run-through tackle,
in the schoolyard, before school.

But I didn't go out for football.
I played basketball and baseball.
But
I didn't go out for football.
I could have gone out for football-
anybody could-but
I didn't.
I stood naked at the class reunion.
He didn't go out for football.
He
didn't go out for football.
Larry McMurtry says he had a fear of poultry.
I
wasn't afraid of football, but I respected it.
I was afraid of football.
I
was afraid of girls.
I wore glasses.
I read Our Gang comics.
The
big kids called me Frog,
after the character with the deep voice,
who wore
glasses. Nicknames are cruel.
What are you doing now, fellows? Still pumping
gas?
