Working backwards, I dropped out of high school
and enlisted in the Air Force.
I was in a band squadron
in Waco, Texas, in 1957. The jazz piano picker Charlie
Rich
had just shipped out. He hadn't become The Silver Fox yet.
Bobby Bradford
was in that band. I played one professional gig,
at the Turf Club, on the Dallas
Highway, with Willie Nelson's sister,
Bonnie. Could that be right? Merle Haggard
stole Bonnie Owens from
Buck Owens. The Bakersfield, California connection.
Bukowski & a Ballad for
Gone America. Woodie Guthrie. Going down
that road feeling bad. I ain't gonna be
treated thisaway. I'm going where the
weather suits my clothes.
Point and Shoot, Florida.
