The Problem of Sustenance

In A Moveable Feast, Even Shipman says,
"There is the problem of sustenance."
At the end, he was writing stories about racing
for the Telegraph from Gulfstream Park,
in Florida. He flew over to Cuba to see Hemingway.
He had pancreatic cancer. He didn't bring his morphine.
He thought he could buy it over there on the black market,
but they had had a crackdown. He was suffering.
He left his unpublished poems in a Louis Vuitton trunk.
A man alone ain't got no fucking chance.
We die alone, and a lot before that.
